Îmi face mare plăcere să vă urez bun venit la petrecerea de Ziua Regelui, pentru a sărbători împreună puternica noastră relație bilaterală excelentă. Vă mulțumesc tuturor că sunteți aici!

Mr President, Mr Interim Prime Minister, your presence this evening demonstrates that the UK-Romania relationship is both a strategic one between partners, and a special one between friends.

Mr President, in particular, let me add once again, to those offered to you by His Majesty King Charles, my sincerest congratulations on your appointment.

Mulțumiri și Băncii Naționale a României pentru că ne găzduiește din nou în această locație minunată.

How fitting that the Romanian Ministry of Defence band and the UK Royal Marine Corps of Drums are here, just a few days after the ratification of our new bilateral defence treaty. It’s a treaty that will strengthen our cooperation as NATO Allies; ensure the United Kingdom is here for Romania; and ensure we are both here for Ukraine, and to defend the peace of our continent against aggression, brutality and imperialism. In that regard, I was so proud to see British forces making up the largest contribution to NATO’s Exercise Steadfast Dart in Romania early this year.

Our defence relationship is complemented by our cooperation to fight disinformation and hybrid threats; disrupt organised criminal groups; and, through extended UK funding, defeat modern slavery and human trafficking.

I want to thank our sponsors for their generous support. You can see them named on our display, and the number gives you an idea of how thriving our commercial relations are. Special thanks to Vodafone, again our main sponsor; and to our platinum sponsors, DNata, Provident and Alexandrion.

It’s a thriving trade and investment relationship in both directions, which is why it was such a special moment, in London on 9 June, to ring the closing bell at the Stock Exchange and celebrate the arrival in the UK of two innovating Romanian tech companies, InnovX and Rebeldot.

2025 is a special year because we celebrate not only the 145th anniversary of our diplomatic relations but also the 150th year of the birth of Queen Marie of Romania, the grand-daughter of our own Queen Victoria and the first, special royal connection between our two countries. Today we have a collection of photographs of Queen Marie in the pavilion, and I’m so pleased that HRH Princess Sophie has joined us for that today.

We’re also celebrating 150 years of the Jockey Club of Romania, and with thanks to them we have a feature on Royal Ascot, one of the defining events of the British sporting and social calendar. Please place a bet before the final race of the day at 20.10, and you’ll be in with the chance of winning tickets to Royal Ascot next year.

We’re also joined this evening by Charlie Ottley, with a sneak preview of the third series of “Flavours of Romania”.

And I’m grateful to Ion Țiriac for loaning us the stunning Rolls Royce Phantom that belonged previously to our Duchess of Kent.

Finally I want to celebrate the ever greater importance and success of the Romanian diaspora in the UK – just in the last weeks, we have seen the enthronement of the UK’s first Romanian Archbishop, and the election of the first Romanian-origin Mayor and President of the UK law society.

So, I hope you agree, it adds up to a truly thriving relationship.

Doresc să le mulțumesc ne-număr-aților români pe care i-am întâlnit pe parcursul acestui an, în toate colțurile țării, pentru prietenia lor și pentru deschiderea de a colabora în beneficiul țărilor noastre.

Thank you again for coming, and it gives me great pleasure to invite the President to speak. Mulțumesc și o seară buna!

[President]

To round off the formal proceedings, I’m delighted to propose a toast: to the health, success and happiness of the President, Government and people of Romania; and to the health and happiness of His Majesty The King.

Noroc și sănătate!
