The event will give participants the opportunity to discover future changes and trends. They will gain insights into anticipated changes in commercial and customs law and explore key trends shaping the trade landscape in 2025 and beyond. It will also give the chance to collaborate and learn. This year’s program emphasizes collaboration between KPMG member firms, and fostering an environment where practical cases and shared experiences take center stage. By working together, we aim to unlock the collective expertise of all participants and support our clients effectively in managing cross-border operations. The event also offers the chance for attendees to expand their network. Participants will be able to engage in one-on-one discussions with industry experts and professionals, exchanging ideas and solutions to navigate challenges and create value in an ever-evolving trade environment.

Our top KPMG speakers will include Massimo Fabio, Head of Trade and Customs KPMG in Italy, Leader EMA, and Mario Urso, Head of Trade and Customs KPMG in Germany, Deputy Regional Leader EMA, who will give presentations at the opening session and will be joined by Alin Negrescu, Partner in KPMG in Romania’s Tax Department and Head of KPMG CEE Trade & Customs. We will also be pleased to welcome as our guest speaker Stefano Inama, chief at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), who has over 30 years of experience advising governments and the private sector on trade and customs issues and is the author of numerous key works on the topic.

As Massimo Fabio comments: “I am much looking forward to this major international conference on this key topic which is currently the focus of so much attention. The event will be a valuable meeting of experts with a wide range of experience, who will come together to share their knowledge and help the business community to navigate the present challenges”

As Mario Urso adds: “KPMG member firms in the EMEA region have a wealth of experience in helping clients with the highly technical issues around customs compliance and with understanding tariffs and trade. It will be a valuable experience to be able to meet so many experts in person, so we can build on our knowledge and pass on to our clients what we will learn in Bucharest.”

The conference will begin with a general overview session looking at the current environment; New World in Customs. In this session, we will look at the effects on the business environment of recent developments. We will then delve into more specific topics by taking a look at The Role of Digitalization and AI in Customs. AI can play a significant role in easing trade and customs procedures both for businesses and customs authorities but, as in most other areas where it is used, it can also bring challenges.

We will then move away from technology to look in more detail at The Impact of Geopolitical Developments on Trade. The presentations will address the current highly volatile environment and the sort of strategies which businesses might adopt in order to navigate it. This will be followed by an Ask the Expert Q & A session, in which participants will be able to raise issues from their activity or share specific business challenges.

Some of the complex issues around customs compliance will be considered through practical case studies. Separate spotlight sessions will be held on Export Control and anti-circumvention best practices and on Developments in CBAM and EUDR areas. Further spotlight sessions on Trade Essentials will cover Origin Management- Maximising Benefits and Minimizing Risks, and Tariff Classification- Best Practices and Common Pitfalls.

The final session will cover the KPMG Trade & Customs Commitment. KPMG in Romania has a highly qualified team of experts who have experience of supporting clients from a broad range of sectors with numerous issues related to trade and to customs compliance. Moreover, our KPMG in Romania team can also work closely with colleagues in other KPMG member firms in the EMEA region and throughout the world. We will be pleased to discuss ways in which we might help your business to address current challenges and opportunities.

As Alin Negrescu comments: “The KPMG experts at this event will address some broad topics and will also delve into the details of technical subjects related to trade and customs compliance, which are important for businesses involved in cross border trade. I am sure this conference will be enjoyable and useful to our clients and the wider community.”
