PPC Group: Construction Begins on Second Phase of 490 MW Solar Park in Megalopoli
Construction has begun on 125 MW, in addition to another 125 MW already under construction on the site of former lignite mines.
Construction for the remaining 240 MW is set to begin in 2026.
The estimated annual production of the 490 MW plant is 860 GWh—enough to cover the energy needs of 215,000 households—and will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 430,000 tons of CO₂ per year.
In total, PPC Renewables will build solar power plants in the region with a capacity of 540 MW, of which 50 MW are already operational.

The second phase of construction has begun for the large-scale 490 MW solar power plant in Megalopoli, a project aimed at transforming former lignite sites into a green energy hub.
Specifically, following the signing of an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contract between PPC Renewables and TERNA, the second phase of the 490 MW photovoltaic project begins, adding another 125 MW on a total area of approximately 494 acres on the Megalopoli mine site.
The first phase of the solar park, with a capacity of 125 MW, is already under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The third phase of the project, which involves building a 240 MW photovoltaic plant, is scheduled to begin in 2026.
For the current phase, involving the construction of 125 MW, approximately 215,000 bifacial solar panels will be installed on fixed structures and connected to the existing Megalopoli ultra-high voltage substation via a new high-voltage station at the “Neo Choremi” site.
With an installed capacity of 490 MW, the plant is expected to produce 860 GWh of electricity annually. This production capacity can meet the energy needs of 215,000 households and reduce CO₂ emissions by 430,000 tons per year.
The PPC Group continues to strengthen its green portfolio, moving swiftly toward commissioning the large-scale 490 MW solar park. The company has already built and operates a 50 MW photovoltaic plant in Megalopoli. Upon completion of the project, PPC Group will have 540 MW of solar energy capacity in the area of the former lignite mines.
Mr. Konstantinos Mavros, Deputy CEO of PPC Renewables, PPC Group, stated:
“Our new ambitious plan puts this area at the forefront of the energy transition. Just like in Ptolemais, where old lignite plants have been converted into large photovoltaic complexes, the Megalopoli solar park will replace lignite production, thereby preserving this region’s historical role in supplying the country with energy.”
According to its three-year strategic plan for 2025–2027, the PPC Group will develop an additional 5.6 GW of green energy in Greece and the broader Southeast European region, aiming to increase its installed RES capacity to 11.8 GW by 2027.
The main development arm of PPC Group’s green energy portfolio is its wholly-owned subsidiary, PPC Renewables. The company has been innovating in the wind and solar energy sectors both nationally and across Europe since the 1980s. It brings innovations not only to Greece but also to Southeastern Europe, through its involvement in all RES technologies, including battery energy storage systems. Currently, PPC Group holds a total renewable energy project portfolio with an installed capacity of 6.2 GW across Greece, Romania, Italy, and Bulgaria. The group’s investment plan aims to boost its renewable energy capacity to 11.8 GW by 2027.
The company’s strategic objective is to further expand its portfolio with new RES technologies, such as offshore wind farms, floating solar parks, and the development of battery-based energy storage systems.
