From May 22–25, 2025, Bucharest becomes the host of one of the most refined events dedicated to chamber music – Frequenza Festival. A powerful and captivating musical journey, designed to celebrate creative reinterpretations and the fusion between traditional and contemporary styles, Frequenza Festival will bring together internationally acclaimed artists in a series of four exceptional concerts. These performances will blend classical spirit with the creativity of the present, in a unique format that brings together strings, brass and piano, set in the prestigious Auditorium Hall of the National Museum of Art of Romania.
The festival’s artistic directors are the renowned trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov, often dubbed the „Paganini of the trumpet” – a musician who has redefined the interpretative standards of his instrument – and pianist Maria Meerovitch, an artist celebrated for her musical sensitivity and prestigious collaborations across the world of classical music.
Together, the two artists have envisioned Frequenza Festival as a fascinating musical journey unfolding over four days of concerts and parallel events. The program brings together reimagined classical masterpieces and contemporary perspectives – from tributes to great composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, to bold explorations of improvisation and classical-jazz fusion.
Frequenza Festival gathers an impressive selection of musicians, including Kristóf Baráti – violin, Sergio Carolino – tuba, Kevin Zhu – violin, Jing Zhao – cello, David Taylor – bass trombone, Roman Spitzer – viola, Zvi Plesser – cello, Pavel Berman – violin, Elias Faingersh – trombone, Eva Bindere – violin, along with Sebastian Burneci, an elite representative of the Romanian jazz scene, performing as a special guest.
Alongside the main concerts, on May 20, 24, and 25, the festival also offers a series of masterclasses hosted by the National University of Music Bucharest, dedicated to young musicians. Open to the public free of charge, these interactive sessions provide a unique opportunity to delve into the artistic worlds of the guest performers, observe their technique up close, and explore the interpretative nuances of some of the most renowned chamber music works in history.
The opening night of Frequenza Festival, on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 7:00 PM, pays tribute to the „three great Bs” of classical music – Bach, Beethoven, Brahms – featuring iconic works with an original twist: Beethoven’s Variations for Piano and Cello arranged in a rare version for piano and flugelhorn, performed for the first time in Romania; selections from Bach’s Goldberg Variations arranged for string trio, Brahms’ Trio for Horn, Violin, and Piano and Beethoven Piano Quartet No. 3 in C-Dur.
On Friday, May 23, 2025, at 7:00 PM, the program turns toward impressionistic tones: Sonata for Two Violins by Eugène Ysaÿe, Sonatina for Cello and Piano by Zoltán Kodály, a String Quintet by Alexander Glazunov, and the special program „Kopfkino” – a concert that evokes vivid sensations and images, where the music becomes the film you experience with your eyes closed: no props, no screen — just the sound that sparks the imagination and turns every note into a story.
Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 7:00 PM, showcases unique collaborations and the versatility of chamber music, with a program featuring Adagio and Allegro by Robert Schumann, Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola by Bohuslav Martinů, Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone by Francis Poulenc, Passacaglia for Violin and Cello by Händel/Halvorsen, and the Piano Quintet in F minor by César Franck.
Sunday, May 25, 2025, at 7:00 PM, Frequenza Festival concludes in spectacular fashion with a concert that blends classical music and jazz through live improvisation, led by brass masters in „Brass Fusion” – an electrifying fusion of classical repertoire and jazz elements, performed by Sergio Carolino, David Taylor, Elias Faingersh, and Sergei Nakariakov, alongside special guest Sebastian Burneci on trumpet.

The National Museum of Art of Romania, housed in the former Royal Palace of Bucharest, is one of the country’s most prestigious cultural venues. The unique atmosphere of the Auditorium Hall blends historical grandeur with artistic intimacy, offering the ideal setting for a festival of international scope such as Frequenza.
Tickets for Frequenza Festival are available on Eventim.ro, with general admission priced at 100 lei. Special rates are available for students, pupils, and pensioners: 50 lei per concert.
