Mr.Oussama Jabri: I was inspired by my own experiences early in my career. I remember a time when I felt overwhelmed by the pressures of life with the demands of my job, Education, relationships, and unsure about my future aspirations. During that challenging period, I had a manager who truly made a difference. She took the time to listen to my concerns and encouraged me to share my thoughts openly. Her support helped me realize that my voice mattered and that I could contribute meaningfully to our team.
That experience taught me the value of having someone in a leadership position who genuinely listens and supports young people. It motivated me to create a similar environment for today’s youth.
At Merck, we believe in the power of intergenerational dialogue. The Emotional Health and Wellbeing Youth Roundtable is designed to provide a platform for young voices to be heard and to influence decisions that affect their lives. By facilitating these conversations, we aim to empower youth to shape their futures, just as my manager empowered me during my formative years.

Nine O’Clock:   What role do you think pharmaceutical companies play in shaping a younger generation that is more health-conscious and preventive?
Mr.Oussama Jabri: Pharmaceutical companies play a vital role in promoting health awareness among young people. For instance, when I was in college, our campus hosted an STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) awareness day sponsored by a local pharmaceutical company. They provided essential information about sexual health, contraception, and the importance of making informed choices.
This initiative empowered students to take charge of their reproductive health but also highlighted the connection between sexual health and mental well-being. Understanding one’s reproductive health can significantly impact self-esteem and emotional health. At Merck, we aim to create similar educational programs that resonate with youth. By actively promoting health literacy, we can help shape a more health-conscious generation that prioritizes preventive care, informed decision-making, and overall mental wellness.

Nine O’Clock:  How is the concept of “sustainable health” reflected in Merck Romania’s vision, especially for young people?
Mr.Oussama Jabri:  Sustainable health means ensuring that future generations have the tools and resources they need for a healthy life. It also integrates and recognizes the impact of environmental factors—such as air and water quality, as well as climate change—on public health. Sustainable health initiatives often aim to reduce pollution and promote a healthier environment.
At Merck Romania, we envision a world where young people are equipped with knowledge about nutrition, mental health, and preventive care. We have also set stringent sustainability goals that address societal and environmental priorities. Our goal is to create a culture where health is valued, not just in the present, but for generations to come

Nine O’Clock:  What are the biggest challenges you identify regarding young people’s access to accurate and relevant medical information?
Mr.Oussama Jabri: One major challenge is the overwhelming amount of information available online. I remember feeling lost in a sea of conflicting advice when I was younger. Many young people struggle to differentiate between reliable sources and misinformation. It’s essential to provide clear, accessible information that resonates with their experiences and concerns. It is also critical to use their preferred social network channels.

Nine O’Clock:  You recently discussed public-private partnerships. What could these two worlds do better to support the health of the younger generation?
Mr.Oussama Jabri: Public-private partnerships can significantly enhance support for the younger generation’s health. For example, Companies can play a pivotal role by funding health insurance programs that provide comprehensive coverage for young people. If governments were to offer tax deductions for these benefits, it would incentivize businesses to invest more in their employees’ health. This would relief public sector hospitals and government resources.
Additionally, companies can support natality by offering family-friendly benefits, such as flexible work hours, parental leave, and childcare support. These initiatives not only improve the health and well-being of young families but also create a positive work environment that encourages growth and stability. By collaborating in these ways, public and private sectors can create a healthier future for the next generation

Nine O’Clock:  How do you see the role of empathetic and future-oriented leadership in managing a company with such a significant impact on public health?
Mr.Oussama Jabri: Empathetic leadership is crucial in today’s world. Leaders must listen to their teams and the communities they serve. I believe that understanding the challenges faced by young people allows us to make informed decisions that truly benefit them. Future-oriented leaders can inspire change by fostering a culture of compassion and innovation within their organizations.

Nine O’Clock:   If you could send a single message to the Romanian youth, what would it be?
Mr.Oussama Jabri: My message to Romanian youth is simple: You are not alone. Your voices matter, and your health is a priority. Don’t hesitate to seek help, ask questions, and advocate for your well-being. Together, we can create a healthier future.

Nine O’Clock:   In a constantly changing world, what is your personal hope for the next generation?
Mr.Oussama Jabri:  My hope is that the next generation embraces their potential and prioritizes their health. I envision a world where young people are empowered to make informed decisions about their well-being. I believe they will create a brighter, healthier future for themselves and generations to come.
