Romania ensures full energy supply from domestic production and becomes an energy exporter
This morning, Romania successfully met its entire electricity demand from domestic production, even with a high consumption of over 7000 MW. Additionally, the country is currently exporting over 1400 MW, with wind power plants contributing one-third of the total energy produced.

Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja emphasized the importance of a balanced and diversified energy mix for Romania’s energy security, noting that the contribution of batteries and hydro production is becoming increasingly significant, despite the ongoing drought. In this context, nuclear power and fossil fuels continue to play a key role, ensuring nearly 30% of the energy mix.
Sebastian Burduja also outlined plans for the development of new production capacities, which include 10,000 MW from solar and wind, 3500 MW from gas, 2200 MW from nuclear, and 1000 MW from battery storage. Additionally, investments from the PNRR fund are already supporting solar and wind park projects of over 500 MW, with an estimated total of 1300 MW to be completed by mid-next year.
The minister emphasized that these strategic investments will help reduce energy bills for Romanians and support the country’s economic competitiveness, providing Romania with the opportunity to become a major energy exporter and regional security provider.
