Like governments and businesses around the world, those in Romania are waiting anxiously to learn what the return of president Donald Trump to the White House will mean for them. Among much else, the outcome of the conflicts in Ukraine and in the Middle East shall be determined by American foreign policy priorities and the country’s relationship with its allies, including the European Union. Reinforcing Europe’s unity and solidarity should be a priority. And governments across the bloc should strive for social cohesion with the aim of maintaining peace, stability and growth. What role will Romania play? In recent decades the country has made great strides in economic growth, improving living standards and attracting foreign investment. Romania can thus provide a model for its Balkan neighbours looking to advance their integration into the union.
