Over 5,000 Suspected Counterfeit Goods Valued at Approximately 8,500,000 RON Seized at Călărași Border Crossing

Border police at the Călărași Border Crossing Point (ITPF Giurgiu), together with customs inspectors from the Călărași Customs Office and the Bucharest General Customs Directorate, discovered over 5,000 goods bearing luxury brand markings, suspected of being counterfeit, during a vehicle inspection.

On August 25, 2024, around 11:50 PM, a 35-year-old Ukrainian citizen presented himself at the Călărași Border Crossing, driving a truck traveling from Turkey through Bulgaria, Romania, and into Ukraine, loaded with textiles.

During the inspection of the vehicle, Călărași border police, along with customs inspectors from the Călărași Customs Office and members of the Mobile Team from the Bucharest General Customs Directorate, found 5,622 items including clothing, footwear, and leather goods, all bearing logos of well-known brands, suspected of being counterfeit.

The goods, valued at 8,426,305 RON if sold as branded products, were seized for further investigation. The driver is currently under investigation by border police for the offense of circulating products bearing identical or similar trademarks to registered marks for identical or similar goods, which harms the trademark holder. Legal action will be proposed by the prosecution unit upon completion of the investigation.
