Radu Bogdan, a visionary in Romanian journalism, passed away on August 4, 2024. Originally from Galați, he founded *”Nine O’Clock,” Romania’s first English-language daily newspaper,* shortly after the 1989 Revolution. The newspaper was launched in October 1991 and quickly became a key player in the country’s media landscape, known for offering a credible and objective perspective on Romanian realities.

In a 2009 interview, Bogdan reflected on his unexpected journey:
“When I started this venture in the fall of 1991, I couldn’t have imagined that Nine O’Clock would become a cornerstone in the post-December press. The newspaper’s endurance is due to the editorial team’s continuous effort to provide an accurate and objective portrayal of Romanian life, aiming for maximum credibility.”
Radu Bogdan was a graduate of the Faculty of Law at the University of Bucharest, holding a doctorate in public international law. His career was dedicated to journalism, where he served as a foreign policy commentator and correspondent for the Agerpres news agency in Italy. He also directed “Dimineața,” the first democratic daily after the Revolution,* and launched several publications including *”Bucarest Matin,” which later became the weekly “Bucarest Hebdo,” and “Sette Giorni.”* His work was highly regarded by the foreign community in Romania, including diplomats, business leaders, and tourists, earning him posthumous recognition as the “Person of the Day” by “Nine O’Clock.”
The news of his passing was announced by journalist Radu Tudor from Antena 3 CNN, who shared his condolences on Facebook:
“Radu Bogdan, a dear friend and professional journalist, the founder of Nine O’Clock, Sette Giorni, and Bucharest Matin, has passed away. I cherish the wonderful times we shared.
My condolences to Gabriela and Răducu. May he rest in peace.
The funeral will be held at Sfânta Vineri Cemetery on August 6th at 11:00 AM.”
In April 2023, Radu Bogdan decided to sell “Nine O’Clock” to Mihai Manea, owner of the Manpres media group, after nearly three decades of operation. The newspaper has since expanded from 8 to 16 pages, offering a more comprehensive format to its readers.
