Redefining Economic Possibilities: AI Momentum at ECA’s Online Debate #EUAI2024

Why the ECA’s Debate Matters?

This isn’t just another talk – it’s the talk. The ECA’s panel discussion on the EU’s AI ambitions is where the movers, shakers and policymakers converge to dissect the future. It’s about shaking up the status quo across all EU countries. But let’s zoom in on the national level – because guess what? It can flip Romania’s economic destiny.

How EU AI Policies Can Boost Romania’s Economy: A Critical Discussion

On 14 June 2024, from 10:00 to 12:00 (CET), the European Court of Auditors (ECA) will host an online panel discussion titled “The EU’s AI Ambitions.” This event is essential for understanding the future of AI policy at the EU level and its economic implications for Romania.

The Economic Opportunity of Generative AI in Romania

A recent study titled “The Economic Opportunity of Generative AI in CEE”, conducted by the Implement Consulting Group and commissioned by Google, reveals that generative AI has the potential to boost Romania’s GDP by €14-16 billion annually, an increase of 5%. This substantial economic impact can be achieved through productivity enhancements, time savings from automation, and reallocation of human efforts to more value-creating activities.

The study’s findings also highlight the job implications of AI adoption in Romania:

  • 42% of jobs are likely to remain unaffected by generative AI.
  • 54% of jobs are expected to work together with generative AI, resulting in productivity boosts.
  • 4% of jobs are estimated to be highly exposed to generative AI, potentially leading to job closures. However, the productivity gains from AI are expected to create new jobs, replacing those lost to automation.

The Role of EU AI Policies in Romania’s AI Future

Romania’s potential to harness AI’s benefits is intertwined with EU-level policies and initiatives. The European Commission’s coordinated plan and the recent adoption of the EU AI Act in March 2024 are critical frameworks that will influence AI adoption and development across all member states, including Romania. The ECA’s panel discussion will delve into these policies, providing insights on how EU can align its strategies to maximise the economic and social benefits of AI.

Despite the potential benefits, Romania currently lags behind the CEE average in AI adoption, indicating a critical need for investment in AI infrastructure and innovation.
