The discussions focused on deepening bilateral relations, economic and security cooperation, Romania’s full Schengen accession as well as topics of European interest in the context of the upcoming election for the European Parliament.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu thanked his German counterpart for the support of his country and his own for Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area, a process for the completion of which Romania continues to count on Germany’s support for the removal of checks at land borders.

The two senior officials have also appreciated the excellent level of bilateral political dialogue and economic cooperation, Germany is Romania’s most important trade partner and the second – largest investor in the Romanian economy.

“An important objective of the Romanian Government is to stimulate investments, using all of Romania’s opportunities, including the NRRP-related ones. The German investors’ interest in Romania so far is encouraging and certainly opens up important new perspectives for cooperation in key areas for the transformation of the Romanian economy, starting with projects in transport and energy infrastructure, digitalization, green energy, defence industry, and many others,” stated the Head of the Romanian Executive.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and his German counterpart, Olaf Scholz, also addressed major issues of interest to EU citizens, which should be reflected on the agenda of the new European Parliament to be elected in June this year, considering security threats posed by Russian aggression on Ukraine near European borders, EU enlargement prospects, the migration – related challenges, achievement of the green and digital transition goals, and the EU’s internal market consolidation. For all these and for defending the democratic values that underpin the entire European construction, both officials agreed on the need for unity, cohesion, solidarity, and balance.
