Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, also the president of the PSD, has expressed his willingness to transfer metro management from the Ministry of Transport to the Bucharest City Hall if a different mayor is elected.
“I’ve recently seen that Mr. Nicusor Dan has admitted he is not prepared to take over the Metro at City Hall. I hope that from June onwards, Bucharest will have a capable mayor who can convince the Government that they want and can manage this essential public service for a European capital,” stated Prime Minister Ciolacu during the government meeting on March 21, 2024.
The Prime Minister’s comments come in light of the Government’s approval on March 21 of a resolution to modernise Metro Line 2, Berceni-Pipera. The total investment for the project amounts to 986.58 million lei, with an expected execution period of 48 months, as announced by the Romanian Government.
“We are modernising the busiest metro line, Berceni-Pipera. It’s a project of nearly one billion lei, primarily funded by European money,” emphasised Prime Minister Ciolacu.
In the upcoming elections on June 9, 2024, Nicusor Dan will be running for a second term as Bucharest mayor, backed by the United Right. The PNL – PSD coalition has designated Catalin Cirstoiu as its candidate for the position of Bucharest mayor.
