Grindeanu’s Stance on Firea’s Candidacy Dilemma

Candidacy Status Still Undecided

Minister of Transport, Sorin Grindeanu, asserted that the PSD (Social Democratic Party) hasn’t finalised a candidate for the Bucharest mayoral position. He humorously responded to Gabriela Firea’s concerns, stating he isn’t aware of any other potential candidate within the party. Grindeanu emphasised that Bucharest isn’t an exception and expects nationwide decisions soon.

No Rush for Decisions

Grindeanu attended part of Marcel Ciolacu’s meetings with regional leaders today, highlighting that discussions about candidacies, including for positions like the County Council in Suceava or Iasi, haven’t taken place within the PSD.

The Transport Minister underscored that the loss in 2020 doesn’t automatically designate Bucharest’s mayor as a PSD member. He clarified that today’s agenda didn’t include deciding on candidates, but the party is likely to designate candidates for national local elections soon.

Responding to Firea’s claim of PSD’s hesitation on her Bucharest mayoral candidacy, Grindeanu mentioned Firea’s recent return as the head of PSD Bucharest and ongoing internal organising activities. He expressed surprise at the absence of a parallel vote count in 2020 and stressed that decisions would align with nationwide choices.

On the issue of Firea’s discontent with the ‘candidate for now’ label, Grindeanu humorously retorted, “How should I know Gabriela Firea’s worries?” He emphasised that Bucharest can’t precede other regions in candidate decisions.

Gabriela Firea, leader of PSD Bucharest, has expressed dissatisfaction with being labeled a ‘candidate for now’ and stated that the matter would be resolved internally within the party.
