Farmers and Truckers’ Protest in Bucharest: Sparse Turnout as Only One Truck with a Tractor Appears in Constitution Square

Overview:

The much-anticipated three-day protest by farmers and truckers in Bucharest commenced yesterday at 9:30 AM, with expectations of a hundred tractors and a hundred TIR (International Road Transport) tractor heads converging in Constitution Square. However, Prefect Rareş Hopincă revealed that only one truck, carrying a single tractor on its platform, received authorisation to participate.

Low Turnout and Authorities’ Response:

Despite initial plans for a significant demonstration, only one participant adhered to the established deadline for application. Prefect Rareş Hopincă announced that as of Saturday at 4:00 PM, no further requests would be considered. He clarified, “The deadline has expired, and we won’t accept any more applications. However, if any additional requests emerge, they will be individually assessed by the  Police on a case-by-case basis.”

Statements from Protest Organisers:

Dănuţ Andruş, a representative of the farmers, conveyed from Afumaţi that he disassociates from the Constitution Square protest, alleging it is organised by a political party, as reported by Digi24. Meanwhile, lawyer Mircea Bogdan Petre, who submitted the protest request, accused Prefect Hopincă of effective disinformation, attributing the weak turnout to the official’s alleged propaganda.

Accusations and Counterclaims:

In response, Petre criticised Hopincă, stating, “Mr. Hopincă functions well as a party misinformation machine. In the last 72 hours, he has done his job well. He created this wave of ridicule and sent a legitimate protest in favour of farmers and truckers… Yes, there are only two vehicles. Unfortunately, I believe that democracy in this country has ceased to exist.”

Government’s Perspective:

Prefect Rareş Hopincă, however, defended the approval of the protest, revealing that the request came from Bogdan Petre, identified as the lawyer of Senator Diana Şoşoacă, the president of the SOS România party. Hopincă clarified, “Ms. Şoşoacă’s lawyer filed the request personally for 50,000 people, 100 tractors, and 100 TIR tractor heads for Victory Square. Following Commission negotiations, the number of protesters was reduced, and the location shifted to Constitution Square.”
