Vlad Voiculescu’s Call for Vaccine Procurement Scrutiny
The Crucial Role of the Premier: Unpacking Decision-Making Dynamics
In a riveting turn of events, Vlad Voiculescu, former Health Minister of Romania, has responded vehemently to the recent DNA investigation into the COVID-19 vaccine procurement scandal. As accusations fly, Voiculescu’s statement not only challenges the legal proceedings but sheds light on the complex decisions made during a critical period in Romania’s battle against the pandemic.
Vlad Voiculescu’s Full Statement:
“On September 21, 2021, I asserted that an investigation into Romania’s vaccine procurement is a welcome initiative. Not only due to the critical juncture for Romania’s public health but also to counteract the political theatrics orchestrated by PSD over the past two years.
It’s essential to note that COVID-19 vaccination fell under the Prime Minister’s jurisdiction during the pandemic, not the Health Minister’s. The infamous vaccination committee, led by Mr. Gheorghiță, reported to Defense Minister Ciucă and Prime Minister Cîțu.
Allocations for member states were determined by a joint procurement contract between the European Commission and suppliers, primarily based on population criteria. The decisions regarding vaccine procurement were solely made by the Prime Minister at that time, with recorded government sessions and documents substantiating this.
While I may have disagreed with some decisions made by those overseeing vaccination (e.g., prioritising “special categories,” secret centers for the “special,” data manipulation, and communication mishaps), and it’s widely known that I was dismissed from the government for it, the quantity of doses procured was a decision made opportunistically amid uncertainties about production availability, variant developments, and the need for revaccination.
Certainly, there are question marks around the timing of an executive decision, devoid of any corruption trail or personal involvement, becoming the subject of a criminal investigation right before an election campaign.
Despite recent concerns about political interference in the judiciary, I firmly believe in the professionalism and integrity within the system to arrive at the correct conclusion: that, during my three months as minister, I acted with honour, always prioritising the lives and health of the people.”
