The youngest project of the SoNoRo cultural association, the SoNoRo Musikland Festival, reaches its 5th edition this year. Inspired by the impressive history of the Transylvanian Saxons, the festival is scheduled for July 14-23, 2023, and will continue to celebrate, through classical music, the cultural heritage of the cities of Brașov and Sighișoara, as well as that of several Transylvanian villages – Râșnov, Hălchiu, Criț, Meșendorf, Viscri, Prod and Saschiz. With the exception of the first concert, access to SoNoRo Musikland Festival concerts is free and by invitation or reservation.

This edition of the festival features 12 concerts, including 3 surprise jam sessions. 70 musicians from eight countries will enchant the audience night after night, performing masterpieces by Franz Schubert, Gioachino Rossini, Niccolò Paganini, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Antonín Dvořák, Frédéric Chopin and others.

The festival will begin on July 14 with a concert performed together with the Brașov Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Cristian Oroșanu in Piața Sfântul Ioan. Access will be by ticket, which can only be purchased on the evening of the concert, in the access area.

During this 5th edition, the festival will return to some of the venues of its first editions, while also venturing to new locations of importance for the architectural heritage of the area. Casa Mureșenilor in Brașov was founded in 1968, following a donation made by the descendants of the Mureșianu family. They put into action the cultural will of academician Iacob Mureșianu and offered the Romanian State, with a view to set up a museum, the necessary space, a very valuable collection of furniture, paintings, and sculptures, but also an archive of inestimable cultural value of over 25,000 documents.

Another new venue is Das Fort Boutique in Râșnov – a wonderful ensemble of 18th century houses, carefully restored and skilfully and elegantly transformed into guest houses, with a gourmet restaurant and relaxation areas.

The Apollonia Cultural Centre, a former Saxon bank built between 1906 and 1908, is another new venue for the festival. It was known as the “Bank of the Bârsa Country” and was built according to the plans of architect Albert Schuller. On the site of this edifice stood the home of the famous 16th century merchant woman Apollonia Hirscher, known for her business reaching to the farthest corners of Austria and Turkey and for her donations to the town.

Two other new venues where the public can enjoy SoNoRo Musikland concerts are Critz Cross in Criț and the fortified church in Saschiz. The former is a recently refurbished guest house with garden and terrace. The rooms in this old Saxon house have a traditional design, however the modern elements that were integrated invite to a maximum of comfort and to a relaxing mood.

The latter venue, St Stephen’s Evangelical Church in Saschiz, was built in 1492 and completed in 1525 on the ruins of two churches, a Romanesque church, and a Gothic Cistercian one. This fortified church has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

“Welcome back, with renewed excitement, to the 5th edition of our festival! We return to Transylvania – an area where fortified churches tell stories that have survived the harsh times that the Saxon population has experienced in over 800 years of habitation. We have scheduled several concerts in the city of Brașov, then we will take our music to some of the villages where several traditional houses have been carefully and respectfully refurbished, becoming ideal destinations for Romanian and foreign tourists, more and more numerous in recent years. This year we open the festival with a concert in Piața Sfântul Ioan – an urban space that has been restored to the city and has become a true hub of Brașov’s cultural life. In this edition we are happy to present five new venues that we want to bring to the attention of our audience and tourists. In addition to that, we have organized concerts in the villages that we have already put on the SoNoRo Musikland map since the first years, enchanting us all with the charm of their natural setting, between sunset and moonlight.  One of the surprises of each edition is, of course, the presence of guest musicians – important names of the international concert scene. We therefore look forward to welcoming you for a new unforgettable edition!”, says Răzvan Popovici, director of SoNoRo Musikland Festival.

Violinists Johannes Fleischmann, Philippe Graffin, Irina Muresanu and Nicolas Dautricourt, violists Răzvan Popovici and William Coleman, cellists Adolfo Gutiérrez Arenas and Andrei Ioniță, pianists Cristian Budu, Andrei Gologan and Roxana Circiu, and clarinetist Andrei Văleanu are among the musicians who will perform at this year’s SoNoRo Musikland Festival. A notable presence is that of the Brașov Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and conductor Cristian Oroșanu, who will open the festival.

“Vodafone joins the SoNoRo Musikland Festival and welcomes such cultural projects which bring classical music to the public’s attention in unique spaces. Thus, Vodafone Romania renews its commitment to local communities and equally to the promotion of successful projects in Romania attracting tens of thousands of tourists from all over the world every year.

The communities in the Transylvanian Highlands area will host these chamber music concerts, where the beauty of the places will be in harmony with the music that world-renowned artists will offer to the public”, said the company representatives.
